General information about Pavlovsk.

The Recidence of Pavlovsk is located about 30 kilometers from St. Petersburg near the town of the same name. It is the most recent of the great imperial residences that were built near the city. Just think that the famous Palace of Petrodvorets dates from the early eighteenth century, whilst the construction of Pavlovsk, the result of several exceptional architects, began around 1780 and ended in 1825.

The complex was constructed and developed during a period of Russian history marked by significant military success which culminated with the successful resistance to the Napoleonic invasion and its solemnity and grandeur reflect the triumphant spirit of the time. The first buildings, including the Grand Pavlovsk Palace and the beautiful park, were built between 1781 and 1786 following the plans of the architect Charles Cameron whilst in later years the palace took the shape that we see today thanks to the work of masters such as James Quarenghi and Vincenzo Brenna.

The Grand Palace is without doubt the flagship of the Pavlovsk residence, thanks to the imposing Palladian-style main building with its Corinthian portico and a number of reliefs and two wings that give it the shape of a horseshoe. The interior is sumptuous, full of fine furniture, porcelain, hard stone and ivory objects, as well as sculptures and paintings of the best Russian and European masters. Each room was decorated in the style of the time and using the finest materials and most luxurious accessories. The Pavlovsk  is also famous for its park which is one of the nation's largest with an area of 600 hectares. The feature that makes it unique is its combination of all the major gardening styles in vogue in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the French formal garden, the Italian garden full of decorative ideas and the English landscape style which was an example of perfect balance between nature and man.
